the Jackdaws' nest

Also known as a monster nest, this nest, a hollow ledge of rock.

A monster communal nest of the Jackdaws, built in a hollow ledge of rock between two cliffs high on a mountain outside Oz; half-filled with the birds' hoard of stolen articles and hidden where no human being can reach it.

Appears in 3 chapters, first in chapter 42, last in chapter 44.

This encyclopedia covers chapters 1 to 100 of the story and shows the world as it stands at chapter 100, so it contains spoilers up to that point. To read it spoiler free, one chapter at a time, open the interactive codex.

What the story establishes

Acoustics and toneA din of violence and terror: filled with the beating wings, sharp screams of rage, and jabbering of the enraged Jackdaw flock and the flash and thud of the Tin Woodman's whirling axe, until the birds flee screaming over the mountains and an uneasy quiet returns to the treasure-strewn ledge.
AppearanceA huge nest heaped in a rock hollow, half-filled with the Jackdaws' hoard of stolen articles — and what looked like worthless papers proves to be an immense fortune of dollar bills of every denomination (fives, tens, twenties, fifties, hundreds, thousands), enough to stuff a dozen Scarecrows, alongside trinkets and a diamond necklace, with leaves cushioning its bottom. (as of ch. 43)
Controlled byThe colony of Jackdaws, whose home it is. (as of ch. 42)
Physical constraintsPerched on a table of rock between two cliffs, with a sheer precipice several hundred feet deep below and a smooth unbroken cliff above; safely hidden where no human being could reach it and with no apparent means of escape.
