A great Head made out of many thicknesses of paper with a carefully painted face, hung from the ceiling of the Throne Room by a wire. Standing behind a screen, the humbug Wizard pulled a thread to make its eyes move and mouth open, and threw his ventriloquist's voice so that it seemed to speak — the disguise in which he first received Dorothy.
