What the story establishes
| Acoustics and tone | A vain, opulent atmosphere: the drawing-room glows with subdued rainbow tints through stained-glass windows, while Langwidere's sitting-room is paneled floor-to-ceiling in mirrors that reflect soft mandolin melodies and her own image hundreds of times over. |
| Appearance | Tall spires glittering against the blue sky, set in charming grounds with flowers, shrubbery, tinkling fountains, and walks bordered by white marble statuary; interior features a sitting-room paneled with floor-to-ceiling mirrors, a mirrored ceiling and polished silver floor, richly furnished drawing-rooms with stained-glass windows, and a high north tower. (as of ch. 54) |
| Controlled by | The royal family of Ev, restored: the Queen mother and her ten children have returned home, and the Queen has crowned her eldest son, Evardo Fifteenth, as the new King ruling from the palace. (as of ch. 67) |
| Physical constraints | Access is deliberately restricted: the king's front door stays closed with a sign directing visitors to the third door of the Left Wing, and of three original wings two were torn down so the remaining wing (on the right) is used to confuse callers. It also contains a high North Tower used as a prison cell. |
