The firm of Smith & Tinker, in the town of Evna where the royal palace stands, wonderful and artistic inventors who built the clock-work mechanical man Tiktok. Both makers are now gone: Mr. Smith, also an artist, painted a river so natural that he fell into it and drowned while reaching across it to paint flowers on the opposite bank; Mr. Tinker made a ladder tall enough to reach the moon, found it so lovely a place that he pulled the ladder up and stayed. Tiktok is the only automatic mechanical man they ever completed.

Appears in 6 chapters, first in chapter 52, last in chapter 64.
