Land of Naught
Also known as the awful Land of Naught, the Land of the Gargoyles, the Country of the Gargoyles, the Country of the Gurgles, a wooden city, that miserable wooden country, all their wooden land, his wooden land.
A dreadful land atop Pyramid Mountain, reached by a spiral staircase whose summit is lost in the clouds, and home to the Gargoyles.
Appears in 6 chapters, first in chapter 78, last in chapter 87.

What the story establishes
| Acoustics and tone | An unnaturally silent land: birds do not sing, cows do not moo, and the Gargoyle inhabitants make no sound at all in flight or speech, so that even the travelers' own low-toned conversation seems loud by contrast. |
| Appearance | An entirely wooden landscape: the ground is sawdust dotted with hard wooden knots worn smooth like pebbles, with odd wooden houses and carved wooden flowers in their yards; tree-trunks of coarse wood bear shaving-like leaves, patches of grass are wooden splinters, and where neither grass nor sawdust shows there is solid wooden flooring; wooden birds flutter among the trees and wooden cows browse on the wooden grass.
