What the story establishes

Acoustics and toneDim to totally dark inside, requiring lanterns to see; gloomy and quiet during the climb, broken only by landings where light and air filter in through rifts in the mountainside.
AppearanceA high, pyramid-shaped mountain whose top is lost in the clouds. (as of ch. 78)
Physical constraintsAscended via a broad, cork-screw stairway cut into the rock inside the mountain, gently sloped rather than steep, wide enough at the base for Jim to draw the buggy through, with two landings along the way: one opening onto the Valley of Voe side, the other opening onto a vast outer space above a black, flame-flecked sea, roughly halfway up.
