The fairy country in which Dorothy's house lands, cut off from the rest of the world by a great surrounding desert; it has never been civilized, so witches and wizards still dwell there, and it holds four witches and the Great Wizard Oz.

What the story establishes

Acoustics and toneBright and musical: birds with rare and brilliant plumage sing in the trees, brooks rush and murmur 'in a voice very grateful' — a joyous contrast to gray Kansas, though the forest depths growl with hidden beasts.
