What the story establishes

Acoustics and toneSweet-toned and celebratory: hat-bells tinkle as the Munchkins move, brilliant birds sing, the brook murmurs, and at Boq's house five fiddlers play as loudly as possible amid laughing and singing.
AppearanceA country of marvelous beauty with green swards, fruit-bearing trees, banks of gorgeous flowers, brilliant birds, and a sparkling brook. (as of ch. 2)
Controlled byFormerly ruled by the Wicked Witch of the East, now dead; the Munchkins are set free. (as of ch. 2)
Physical constraintsBounded at the East by the great uncrossable desert — 'none could live to cross it' — so the only way onward from the Munchkin country is inward, along the road of yellow brick.
