The Oz Series
Chapter 89
Part of the Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz: The Underground World arc.
What happens
Eureka finds herself in disgrace despite not having eaten the piglet, because the folks of Oz know she tried to commit the crime and only an accident prevented her; even the Hungry Tiger refuses to associate with her. Forbidden to wander the palace and confined to Dorothy's room, Eureka begs her mistress to send her somewhere she can enjoy herself, and Dorothy, herself anxious to get home, promises they will not stay in Oz much longer. The evening after the trial, Dorothy asks Ozma to let her look in the enchanted picture; Ozma consents and instructs her to make a wish so the picture will show the desired scene. Dorothy sees that Uncle Henry has returned to the Kansas farm and that he and Aunt Em are dressed in mourning, believing their niece was killed by the earthquake, so she resolves to get back as soon as possible. Zeb views Hugson's Ranch in the picture and longs to return, telling Dorothy that he and Jim do not fit into a fairyland and that Jim has begged to go home ever since losing the race; Dorothy replies Ozma can easily send them, promising to go to Kansas the next morning while Zeb goes to California.
The final evening is spent together (except Eureka) in Ozma's rooms, with the Wizard performing new tricks, the Scarecrow telling stories, the Tin Woodman singing a love song in his metallic voice, Tik-tok dancing a jig after Dorothy winds him up, and the Yellow Hen relating her adventures with the Nome King in the Land of Ev; refreshments are served to those who eat. The next morning the company assembles for the final parting, attended by officials and courtiers; Dorothy, holding Eureka, bids farewell, and the Wizard invites her to return, which she promises to do if possible while noting Uncle Henry and Aunt Em need her on the Kansas farm. Ozma wears the Magic Belt, kisses Dorothy farewell, makes her wish, and the girl and kitten vanish instantly, Ozma explaining Dorothy is now greeting her uncle and aunt in Kansas. Zeb then brings out Jim harnessed to the buggy, thanks everyone for saving his life and sending him home, and bids goodbye; he starts, rubs his eyes, and finds Jim trotting contentedly along the familiar road toward the gates of Hugson's Ranch, where Uncle Hugson comes out astonished, exclaiming at the return of Zeb and Jim and asking where they have been.
